The Firmware Engineer at Gen-Probe Incorporated in San Diego, CA will:
  • Design, develop, debug and unit test embedded firmware to control molecular diagnostic instruments. 
  • Utilize experience with embedded C/C++ programming to work on firmware for DC and stepper motor controllers, heater controllers, sensor technology, Peltiers controllers, fluorometer controllers, main communication boards, lab automation controllers, RFID detecting boards, and vicinity tags. 
  • Perform system development including working in real-time system and scheduling algorithm (debugging using oscilloscopes, in circuit debugger, bus analyzers).
  • Develop communications firmware to run on USB, Ethernet, CAN, I2C, RS232 and SPI busses using USB 2, TCP/IP, and custom CAN-based protocols. 
  • Apply experience with MPLAB IDE, debugger and Harmony platform for Microchip microcontroller firmware development.
  • Develop and execute unit and integration tests to verify embedded firmware. 
  • Archive firmware in MKS Source Control system and manage and coordinate projects using Agile methodologies.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering or related field plus two years of firmware development experience.
  • Will also accept a Master's degree in Computer Engineering or related field plus 6 months of firmware development experience.
  • Experience must include six months of experience with each of the following:
    • (1) embedded C/C++ programming;
    • (2) embedded system development including working in real-time system and scheduling algorithm (debugging using oscilloscopes, in circuit debugger, bus analyzers);
    • (3) Microchip microcontroller development experience using MPLAB IDE and Harmony platform;
    • (4) near field communication including RFID technology and vicinity tags;
    • (5) unit and integration testing of embedded firmware;
    • (6) DC and stepper motor controllers, heater controllers and sensor technology;
    • (7) MKS Source Control System and Agile methodologies;
    • (8) serial communication using CAN, I2C, RS232 and SPI. Will accept any suitable combination of education, training, or experience.
