Job Summary

Support engineering and operations by using knowledge of analytical tools and techniques to identify compositions and sources of failures found in processing, testing, and field returns relating to foreign object debris (FOD) contaminates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the below mentioned responsibilities as reasonably required by business needs. 

  • Prepare metallurgical cross sections of mammography panel materials in a way that isolates pixel and sub-pixel size defects.
  • Maintain metallurgical cross sectioning equipment which involves maintaining an inventory of consumables used in preparing cross sections.
  • Without supervision, determine the most appropriate cross section equipment and cross section materials to use to obtain useful cross sections.
  • Perform daily maintenance, both ongoing and preventative, of all equipment within assigned area.
  • Perform electrical, mechanical and utilities troubleshooting of cross sectioning equipment.
  • Participate and, in some cases lead, in developing experimental test methods and testing protocols to include SOP documentation.
  • Follow established “Good Laboratory Practices” in performing all primary tasks and related sub-tasks.
  • Participate in the establishment of specific laboratory safety practices and guidelines.
  • Follow established safety guidelines in performing all primary tasks and sub-tasks.
  • Audit and maintain lab supply inventory for critical materials to support all analysis types
  • Audit documentation to comply with all work safety rules and regulations.
  • Participate and, in some cases lead various spectrographic and chromographic material characterization techniques to discern the nature of FOD compounds.  SEM, EDAX, Raman, micropscopy .
  • Responsible for publishing data associated with the analysis and maintaining a archival location for all analytical results produced.
  • Insure the use of the correct maintenance procedures and checklists/specifications.
  • Assist management and fellow coworkers to resolve production issues in a timely manner  which may include securing and analyzing samples from all manufacturing venues (ex: Clean Rooms)
  • Be willing to work any shift and perform other related duties as directed.
  • Work on special projects as requested.
  • Interfaces with Production, R&D, Engineering, RA/QA as well as other divisions regarding corporate wide work requirements. 
Physical Demands

  • Sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • ☒ Lifting/pushing/pulling and carrying products weighing up to 45 pounds


  • Associates Degree in Scientific Engineering, Mechanical, or Electronics discipline preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a clean room, manufacturing and/or lab environment preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years operational experience with Microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, SEM/EDAX, and other instrumental experiments
  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) knowledge a plus
  • Proficiency with computers, electrical test equipment, mechanical operations, and associated equipment
  • Ability to read and follow electro-mechanical assembly drawings, procedures and schematics.
  • Ability to follow Hologic written procedures to maintain GMP compliance and ISO 13485 certification.
  • Ability to write experimental reports summarizing experimental work and present experimental findings to various scientific and engineering groups.
  • Ability to read and follow written specification procedures in all operations.
  • Must be detailed oriented and work as a team with management, technicians and co-workers.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques used in material identification such a qualitative, quantitative, microscopic, electrochemical, spectroscopy, thermal, and chromatography analyses.
