Position Summary

A Sr. Systems Engineer focuses on eliciting and analyzing customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, converting them to design requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem, the system lifecycle.  He/she plays a central role in the technical efforts of delivering world-class products with a focus on timeliness, readiness and reliability, through fully understanding all the stakeholders and functions involved in the design and development process of a system.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

As a part of an enthusiastic, dynamic, results-oriented team of mechanical, electrical, and software development engineers, scientists, and product directors working to define and develop Hologic’s best-in-class biopsy workflow and digital mammography products, the Sr. Systems Engineer will:

  • Perform Systems Engineering activities including concept, specification, design, and implementation for new and existing products with partial focus on specimen/cabinet radiography systems
  • Create, interpret, and manage user needs, product requirements, and design specifications
  • Propose system definitions or specifications to meet customer requirements and user needs
  • Drive and maintain traceability between system requirements and subsystem requirements
  • Actively participate on teams developing system designs to enhance system performance, reliability and clinical function
  • Propose alternative system concepts to meet product definitions and evaluate them based on risk, product cost, performance, safety, and reliability considerations
  • Use computer assisted engineering and design software to perform engineering tasks, create analytic tools and simulations to model system performance
  • Participate in design reviews and ensure subsystem designs work together to fulfill product requirements
  • Ensure that design implementation, test, and maintenance methods and processes are developed and executed in a manner that supports quality standards
  • Performs a wide variety of complex technical tasks to assist design engineers with developmental operations
  • Primary troubleshooter for project at system level
  • Recognize and report problems affecting successful completion of project, is instrumental in suggesting or effecting solution
  • Significant technical contributor to generation of specifications and schedules
  • Manage outside resources, as required
  • Complete design documentation and Engineering Change Orders, as required by Hologic standard operating procedures
  • Facilitate Design Transfer to Manufacturing
  • Work in FDA/ISO regulated environment.


  • Demonstrated understanding of:
    • full product development cycle, from concept to product delivery, of complex medical devices
    • interactions among components in a complex system and how they affect system performance
  • Ability to:
    • work well with diverse groups of people, interact effectively with cross-functional teams and partner with functional managers and other departments
    • manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously and adapt to changes in program priorities
    • transform physical and mathematical concepts into sound engineering designs
    • define clear and effective product requirements and specifications
    • communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally
  • Proficient with systems engineering methodologies/tools; and physical/mathematical modeling tools
  • Familiar with automated tools for requirements management, document creation, and defect tracking
  • Knowledge of international standards on medical or other electronic devices


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with focus in Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or other interdisciplinary technical field.  Master’s degree preferred.


  • 5+ years of experience in the design, development and manufacturing of medical equipment
  • Experience in new product development
  • Experience within FDA regulated, product development environment

Specialized Knowledge

Additional Details

  • Travel up to 50% to West Coast and other Hologic facilities or customer sites for the first year.
